Armed Forces Medical Library (Prod 7489)

The Library of the Surgeon General's Office was established in 1836 to serve the needs of military medical officers. With the arrival of Dr. John Shaw Billings in 1863, the library's mission was expanded to meet new challenges. COL Billings, during his tenure, created the INDEX MEDICUS in 1880, the first systematic effort to index the world's rapidly proliferating medical literature. The collection grew over the years and became the finest collection of medical literature in the world. In 1956, an Act of Congress created the National Library of Medicine in Bethesda, MD, and the majority of the Army's collection was transferred to the new agency. The remaining Library of the Surgeon General's Office, now the Armed Forces Medical Library (AFML), is a specialized core of military medical materials, allied areas of management and hospital administration, and historical monographs.
