As none of these methods adequately prevented internal rotation of the foot or reliably encouraged full extension of the knee, he designed the Zero Degree Knee.
- Elevates the heel to create adequate free space posterior to the knee, to allow for full knee extension
- Keeps the toes pointed toward the ceiling in a neutral position
- Prevents external rotation of the extremity, thus eliminating the associated flexion at the knee
